Artist Statement – John Robinson

“Sea Shadows” is an interaction in print with the beaches in South Eastern Tasmania and King Island.

Capturing the daily changes of tidal movement, seasonal changes and storm
deposits along shorelines and shallows of the intertidal zone. This exhibition presents Seaweeds at a point between washing up and drying out completely, the work reflects the artist’s fascination at the beauty of the fine structures and intricate nature of seaweeds. The fragility of the seaweed is evident in the images pointing to the fragile nature of our surrounding coastlines. Picking up and studying the different seaweeds that wash up on beaches all around Tasmania has become an obsession and I can barely walk a hundred metres without picking up and thinking about how I can incorporate the seaweed into a print. The colours that the seaweeds have when freshly washed up are often so vibrant, it is difficult to try to replicate in colour. I often think the structure of the seaweed best shown off in the mono rather than the multi- colour prints.

The prints are the result of an Arts Tasmania residency on King Island in August 2020 and ongoing collection of seaweed on beaches in South Eastern Tasmania.
